Mahoning Valley Food Policy
Grow Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley Organizing Collaborative have launched the Mahoning Valley Food Policy Council (MVFPC). Food policies that support local agricultural marketing, production, distribution and processing are key to ensuring that Mahoning County has access to healthy affordable locally grown food.
The MVFPC repesents a variety of sectors involved with our local food system. Sectors may be representative of but are not limited to, transportation, hunger, education, waste management, restaurants, retailers, churches, growers, economic development, health, and nutrition. Among the 25 seats are 6 citizen seats and 6 government seats. If you are from Trumbull or Columbiana county and have an interest in joining the council please download, fill out and mail the candidate form. You may also review our Talking Points.
What is Food Policy?
A food policy is any guideline, rule, practice or regulation that effects how individuals, households, organizations, institutions and government access, disribute, eat, produce and dispose of food. The function of food policy councils in general is to find ways to fit state and federal guideline to local needs. We can have agricultural markets and many gardens, but we must have policies in place that support the production, processing and distribution of local food in order to make a favorable economic impact.
